EUreka3D: Concluding a Successful Project Supporting Cultural Heritage Initiatives

EUreka3D held its final conference on December 13, 2024, in Girona, uniting the cultural heritage community focused on 3D digitisation. As EGI, we are proud to have played a central role in this event, sharing insights into the technology behind the EUreka3D DataHub and engaging in discussions about the future of EUreka3D XR.

The conference showcased the project’s comprehensive results, including the methodology, the DataHub platform, and case studies presented by the partners involved in the digitisation process. Additionally, there were presentations on digitisation experiences from the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Museu Etnològic del Montseny.

The event also featured the launch of the EUreka3D final booklet, which compiles best practices for 3D digitisation of cultural heritage.

Recordings of the sessions, including the EUreka3D DataHub presentation, are available on YouTube.

Moreover, a book titled "3D Research Challenges in Cultural Heritage: Paradata, Metadata, and Data in Digitization" documents the project's experiences using the Europeana Data Model to describe 3D objects.

How Did EGI contribute?

In addition to supporting the communication and dissemination activities, EGI was instrumental in the creation of the EUreka3D DataHub Platform, with the collaboration of Cyfronet.

EGI's contribution lies in the availability of components such as:

  1. Authorisation and Authentication, based on EGI Check-in, provided by GRNET;
  2. Data Management, based on the EGI DataHub service and managed by the EGI Federation Member Cyfronet.
  3. Compute power, provided by the EGI Cloud Compute service and Federated Cloud Infrastructure.

And Now That the Project is Over?

We cannot wait to start the EUreka3D-XR project, where EGI will continue to provide Cloud Compute and AAI services.

EGI is committed to supporting the Cultural Heritage community and the needs of Cultural Heritage Institutions, helping them with the progress towards their digital transformation.

In particular, Eureka3D and EGI have signed an SLA to ensure the sustainability of the EUreka3D DataHub until the end of 2027, allowing the existing platform to continue ingesting 3D content.
Moreover, thanks to an MoU with EOSC Beyond, EUreka3D will be able to test and pilot EUreka3D and EUreka3D-XR datasets and services within the EOSC Beyond Innovation Sandbox. The partnership will also support interoperability efforts by integrating these projects into EOSC Beyond’s initiatives, particularly in aligning metadata schemas with European Data Spaces. Additionally, the collaboration emphasises knowledge sharing and dissemination among cultural institutions, research bodies, and other stakeholders. Ultimately, this strategic alignment enhances innovation, promotes Open Science accessibility, and strengthens EUreka3D and EUreka3D-XR’s role as a competence centre for 3D technology experimentation.
