Meet the EGI2024 Exhibitors: CMCC

EGI2024 - CMCC

Get to know the exhibitors at EGI2024 in this series of interviews, and meet us in Lecce, Italy from 1-3 October! Today, let's discover the CMCC Foundation, co-hosts of the Conference.

Understanding the interaction between climate change and society

Can you explain what CMCC does?

CMCC (Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici) is an international research centre that collaborates with experienced scientists, economists, and technicians who work together to provide full analyses of climate impacts on socio-economic systems. The mission of CMCC is to investigate and model our climate system and its interactions with society to provide reliable, rigorous, and timely scientific results to stimulate sustainable growth, protect the environment and develop science-driven adaptation and mitigation policies in a changing climate. CMCC also aims to develop foresight and quantitative analysis of our future planet and society.

What is the relationship with EGI?

The CMCC Foundation joined the EGI Federation in 2020 through the project IS-ENES3. The Infrastructure for the European Network for Earth System modelling (IS-ENES) supports the European Earth system modelling community working on understanding and predicting climate variability and change. IS-ENES joined the EGI Federation represented by the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change Foundation (CMCC) in the EGI Council – expressing its interest in contributing to the strategic direction of the federation. By joining the EGI Federation, the CMCC Foundation represents IS-ENES and the climate modelling community-specific interests, sharing reflections that relate to its scientific domain, with a specific focus on the data infrastructure. Participation in the EGI Federation is expected to bring a mutual benefit and pave the way towards closer collaboration between the climate modelling community and the federation in the context of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). Indeed, IS-ENES recognises the EGI Council participation as a key opportunity to further integrate its data services into the European e-infrastructure landscape, making them also available to a wider interdisciplinary user community.

Why do you think it’s important to be at EGI2024?

EGI2024 is not just an ordinary conference; it is a convergence of the world's leading experts in cloud computing, big data, and scientific research. As a participant, you will have the opportunity to delve into the latest advancements in e-infrastructure and explore their applications in climate science and beyond. CMCC's role as co-hosts brings a unique focus on the intersection of digital technology and climate change, providing a platform for groundbreaking discussions and collaborations that can drive significant environmental impact.

What can people expect when they come to your booth?

EGI2024 attendants at the CMCC booth will gain insights into the latest technological trends and their applications in climate science, proving CMCC's commitment to advancing climate science and fostering innovation through cutting-edge digital infrastructures. It will be an opportunity to meet CMCC researchers, network and get to know the platforms and tools used at CMCC, e.g., the ferry routes web application like GUTTA_VISIR to reduce CO2 emissions, Witoil (Where is the oil) tool and Decision Support System to simulate the oil spill in the sea, beyond state-of-the-art technologies developed in projects like Silvanus to prevent and combat wildfires, the Web Applications for Ocean visualisation and the products managed by CMCC within the Copernicus Marine service.
