<a href="https://nl.mathworks.com/?requestedDomain=">Mathworks</a>, the leading developer of mathematical computing software for engineers and scientists, is by now a familiar presence at the EGI Conference!



Next to a booth, the <a href="https://lisboncouncil.net/">Lisbon Council</a> is also hosting two project workshops as co-located events: LETHE on Tuesday and TANGO on Thursday.&nbsp;They are open for everyone, make sure to check the programme and feel free to drop in!



A trusted EGI’s collaborator in projects such as GREAT and interTwin, it’s lovely to see <a href="https://eodc.eu/">EODC</a> exhibiting at the conference with their own booth!



We’re happy to welcome <a href="https://galaxyproject.org/projects/esg/">EuroScienceGateway</a> again. This project intends to leverage the European compute infrastructures for data-intensive research guided by FAIR principles!&nbsp;



Also to be found in our exhibition area is <a href="https://www.lifewatch.eu/">LifeWatch ERIC</a>, a European Research Infrastructure Consortium providing e-Science research facilities to scientists investigating biodiversity and ecosystem functions.



Interested in the increasing need for cloud services at the edge, independent of any platform? The <a href="https://www.aces-edge.eu/">ACES</a> project will not only have a booth at the conference, they are also organising an open-for-all workshop as a co-located event on Thursday!



AI and ML are one of the core topics of our conference (for example during the dedicated session ‘Processing Research Data with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning’ on Thursday), the <a href="https://ai4eosc.eu/">AI4EOSC</a> project will be present at our exhibition. AI4EOSC will deliver an enhanced set of services for the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) models and applications for the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). Another AI project, <a href="https://ai4europe.aiod.eu/">AI4Europe</a> will be responsible for the development and facilitation of the European AI-on-Demand Platform (AIoD). EGI is a proud partner in both projects!



As for FAIR Data and Open Science, <a href="https://www.fair-impact.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">FAIR-IMPACT</a>, <a href="https://www.rd-alliance.org/rda-tiger/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">RDA TIGER</a> and <a href="https://faircore4eosc.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">FAIRCORE4EOSC</a> are hosting a joint booth, where the three initiatives will showcase how they support and promote interoperability mechanisms across domains and institutions, and foster a global alignment of FAIR frameworks



Moving to marine sciences, the <a href="https://aneris.eu/">ANERIS </a>project aims to create, test and implement the next generation of scientific tools and methods for marine life-sensing and monitoring. Also, at the exhibition, you will find <a href="https://blue-cloud.org/about-blue-cloud-2026">Blue-Cloud 2026</a>, the project that will provide a collaborative Open Science platform for marine research in EOSC.&nbsp;



Our exhibition also features frequent EGI collaborators <a href="https://www.stackhpc.com/">StackHPC</a>, the company that develops OpenStack capabilities for research computing use cases.



We also welcome the presence of <a href="https://oipub.com/">OiPub</a> as part of their collaboration with <a href="https://www.egi.eu/egi-dih/">the EGI Digital Innovation Hub</a>. OiPub is a web platform for open science and knowledge sharing that works to make information faster and easier for researchers to find and share.



And last but not least, we are very pleased to host a shared e-infrastructure booth with <a href="http://www.openaire.eu/">OpenAIRE</a>, <a href="https://www.eudat.eu/">EUDAT</a>, <a href="https://prace-ri.eu/">PRACE </a>and <a href="https://geant.org/">GÉANT</a>. EGI is committed to deepen its ties with these European e-infrastructures. This intention will be the central theme during the closing session on Thursday. At the EGI2024 exhibition, we gladly provide the opportunity to our colleagues to be part of a large joint booth.&nbsp;

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-challenge">The Challenge</h3>



Researchers using MATLAB often need access to shared datasets too large to download locally.&nbsp; Similarly, they might need access to supercomputers to run their MATLAB programs.



EGI hosts data and has supercomputing resources, but MATLAB users need MATLAB on EGI to take advantage of these resources. In addition, multiple research communities share software toolboxes they develop in MATLAB. EGI could make these tools available on their platforms.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.egi.eu/services/notebooks/">Hosting MATLAB on EGI as part of the Jupyter environment</a>&nbsp;allows MATLAB users to continue developing algorithms and use their code to perform data analysis on the cloud without having to change programming languages or environments. The MATLAB desktop IDE is available via a web-browser using the users’ licenses.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-egi-dih-mathworks-collaboration">EGI DIH-MathWorks Collaboration</h3>



MathWorks and EGI are partnering to offer a web-based version of MATLAB via EGI’s Jupyter environment, making the familiar MATLAB desktop environment accessible via a web browser.



All the standard MATLAB functionality is available via EGI’s hosted MATLAB, including:

<li class="has-medium-font-size">Support for several <a href="https://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab/scientific-data.html">scientific</a> and <a href="https://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab/data-import-and-export.html?s_tid=CRUX_lftnav">standard data formats</a>, including <a href="https://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab/import_export/download-data-from-web-service.html">web data</a> and those from <a href="https://www.mathworks.com/hardware-support/home.html">specialised hardware</a>.</li>



<li class="has-medium-font-size"><a href="https://www.mathworks.com/products/matlab/live-editor.html">Live Editor</a>&nbsp;for&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab/matlab_prog/create-live-scripts.html">building computational notebooks explaining workflows and results</a>&nbsp;using&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mathworks.com/products/matlab/live-script-gallery.html">MATLAB Live Scripts</a>.</li>



<li class="has-medium-font-size"><a href="https://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab/app-designer.html">App Designer</a>&nbsp;for creating graphical user interfaces or Apps</li>



<li class="has-medium-font-size"><a href="https://www.mathworks.com/products/compiler.html">MATLAB Compiler</a>&nbsp;for building,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mathworks.com/help/compiler/web-apps.html">Web-Apps</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href="https://www.mathworks.com/help/compiler/standalone-applications.html">standalone software</a>&nbsp;for easy sharing.</li>



<li class="has-medium-font-size"><a href="https://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/">MATLAB File Exchange</a>&nbsp;hosts 40,000&nbsp; shareable MATLAB software tools&nbsp; downloadable for free. GitHub repos can be connected to File Exchange for increased visibility.</li>



<li class="has-medium-font-size"><a href="https://www.mathworks.com/solutions/cloud.html">MATLAB in the Cloud</a>&nbsp;allows MATLAB integration with cloud services including support for Docker containers</li>
</ul>



Users of Campus-, Institute- and Enterprise MATLAB licenses can use their email logins as credentials to access the service. All products and toolboxes covered by a user’s license will be available to that user on the EGI infrastructure.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-impact">Impact</h3>



The pilot enables MATLAB users to run MATLAB on EGI infrastructure to analyse and visualize data, develop algorithms, and share research output with others via the Jupyter framework hosted by EGI.



Many universities and research institutions already offer sitewide access to MATLAB, enabling all researchers, educators and students to use MATLAB and Simulink products. By MathWorks enabling EGI visitors to bring their licenses (BYOL) to EGI’s resources, users can use the same MATLAB functionality on EGI as they have access to on their desktops and on institutions’ infrastructure. This makes MATLAB users more effective, avoiding disruptions and gaps in the computing tool chain, enabling them to try out new tools, and providing more research innovation options via tighter connections to EGI’s compute and data.

Web-based MATLAB Integration with EGI for Enhanced Research

<a href="https://www.mathworks.com/solutions/geoscience.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Geo- and climate scientists</a> worldwide use the technical computing language and environment <a href="https://www.mathworks.com/academia/research.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MATLAB for their research</a>. MATLAB supports a wide variety of data formats, including the <a href="https://www.mathworks.com/help/matlab/ref/ncread.html?s_tid=doc_ta" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">netCDF</a>, <a href="https://www.mathworks.com/help/map/ref/readgeoraster.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">GRIB</a>, and many <a href="https://www.mathworks.com/solutions/geoscience/working-with-geoscience-data.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">other</a> popular common and geoscience-specific formats.



The <a href="https://enesdataspace.vm.fedcloud.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ENES Data Space</a>, launched in the context of the EU H2020 <a href="https://www.egi.eu/project/egi-ace/">EGI-ACE project</a>, provides an open, scalable, cloud-enabled data science environment for climate data analysis built on top of the <a href="https://www.egi.eu/eosc-compute-platform-services/">EOSC Compute Platform</a>. The Data Space, made available through a user-friendly JupyterLab GUI, integrates into a single environment climate datasets from well-known initiatives (e.g., <a href="https://pcmdi.llnl.gov/CMIP6/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CMIP6</a>), compute resources, data science and AI/ML tools, targeting big data processing, interactive analytics and visualisation, and more advanced scientific use cases based on ML, like the data-driven Digital Twin applications for extreme climate events developed in the context of the EU Horizon Europe <a href="https://www.egi.eu/project/intertwin/">interTwin project</a>.



A collaboration between the <a href="https://www.egi.eu">EGI Foundation</a>, <a href="https://www.cmcc.it/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">CMCC</a> and <a href="https://it.mathworks.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MathWorks</a> makes MATLAB available to users of the <a href="https://enesdataspace.vm.fedcloud.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ENES Data Space</a>. 



MATLAB is available as part of the Jupyter-based environment, allowing users to analyse data directly on the cloud without time-consuming downloads. Leveraging the MATLAB Integration for Jupyter, scientists and researchers from the climate change scientific domain can either use the <a href="https://github.com/mathworks/jupyter-matlab-proxy?tab=readme-ov-file#run-matlab-code-in-a-jupyter-notebook" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">MATLAB kernel</a> within a Jupyter Notebook or take advantage of the <a href="https://github.com/mathworks/jupyter-matlab-proxy?tab=readme-ov-file#open-matlab-in-a-browser" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">full MATLAB desktop environment</a> within the browser.



In the context of the <a href="https://www.egi.eu/trainings-and-webinars/">EGI webinar series</a>, a <a href="https://www.egi.eu/event/harnessing-advanced-research-infrastructures-for-earth-and-environmental-data-management-and-analysis-a-matlab-perspective/">webinar</a> featuring Kostas Leptokaropolous on the 22nd of May took users through the step-by-step process of <a href="https://github.com/ENES-Data-Space/notebooks/blob/main/Visualize_Climate_Data_with_MATLAB.ipynb" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">accessing data via MATLAB</a> on the ENES Data Space. The case study includes a <a href="https://github.com/ENES-Data-Space/notebooks/blob/main/Visualize_Climate_Data_with_MATLAB.mlx" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Live Script</a> &#8211; a MATLAB computational notebook incorporating text, code, equations, rich text and custom-built low-code Live Tasks all in one document &#8211; and a <a href="https://github.com/ENES-Data-Space/notebooks/blob/main/Visualize_Climate_Data_with_MATLAB.ipynb" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Jupyter Notebook</a>. The workflow includes importing, filtering, and manipulating the data, creating maps and graphs, comparing results with each other and performing hypothesis testing to evaluate the statistical significance of different outcomes.
