Get to know the exhibitors at EGI2024 in this series of interviews, meet us in Lecce, Italy from 1-3 October! Today, let's discover the world of EODC: Earth Observation Data Centre.
EODC: Translating data into knowledge
Can you explain what EODC does?
Based in Vienna, Austria, EODC was established in 2014 to tackle the upcoming challenges posed by the growing data volumes of the operational Copernicus Sentinel missions. EODC maintains a global long-term archive of Sentinel data utilising a long-term storage solution (disk and tape storage) and it provisions EO data processing capabilities on its cloud computing infrastructure based on OpenStack. In addition, it connects to one of Europe's most powerful computer processing environments, the Vienna Scientific Cluster (VSC), and hosts some activities on it. Besides the IT infrastructure, EODC also specialises in integrating data from different sources to provide a cohesive view of Earth’s processes and changes over time. For the past 10 years, EODC has been working together with its shareholders and multi-national partners from science, as well as the public and private sectors, to support scientific research and practical applications in areas like environmental monitoring, climate change, disaster management, and urban planning.
What is the relationship with EGI?
Since 2017, EGI and EODC have built a strong partnership to advance Earth observation data and computing capabilities for European researchers. Our collaboration began with the EOSC-Hub project, which established core components of the European Open Science Cloud. Following this success, we expanded our efforts with the C-SCALE project, which delivered Copernicus big data analytics services via EOSC, while we also partnered in establishing the Green Deal Data Space Foundation and its Community of Practice. Today, EGI and EODC are working together on the interTwin project, focusing on creating a prototype for an interdisciplinary Digital Twin Engine. Through these initiatives, we are driving innovation that enhances our ability to tackle societal challenges with actionable insights and cutting-edge technology.
Why do you think it’s important to be at EGI2024?
Our participation in EGI2024 will provide us with a crucial platform to showcase our Earth observation data offering and services and the latest advancements in our technological solutions. This visibility will enable us to highlight the practical applications and benefits of our solutions in addressing critical challenges such as climate change and environmental monitoring. In addition, it will allow us to engage in high-level discussions about emerging trends and evolving needs within the field of data analytics. By participating in these conversations, we can align our strategies with broader European initiatives and ensure that our solutions remain at the forefront of scientific and technological developments. Finally, the conference serves as a vital venue for forging and strengthening professional relationships with experts, stakeholders, and policymakers across various sectors.
What can people expect when they come to your booth?
When visitors come to the EODC booth, they can expect to engage with us and explore EODC’s Earth observation data services and technologies and how they support practical applications in fields like climate change and environmental monitoring. In addition, we will be glad to discuss their specific data needs and how our solutions can be tailored to support their research or business. We would like to connect with other professionals in the field, exchange ideas, and explore potential collaborations with EODC and other stakeholders.
Can delegates see EODC in other sessions/demonstrations/workshops/posters?
We are contributing to interTwin’s presence in the session “Replicating and predicting complex systems with scientific Digital Twins”, see you at EGI2024!
