UKIM Joins EGI Federation as a Full Member

We are pleased to announce that UKIM, a long-standing member of our Federation and the representative of the MARGI national infrastructure in North Macedonia, has been promoted to full Federation membership. This recognition reflects UKIM’s important contributions to the EGI Federation.

UKIM established MARGI, the Macedonian Academic Research Grid Initiative, in 2005, operated by FCSE (Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering).

The main objectives of MARGI are:
    • Coordinate efforts to further develop Grid, cloud and high-performance computing facilities and help them integrate into national e-Infrastructure;
    • Organise dissemination and training activities and help Macedonian research communities to develop and deploy applications that national infrastructure;
    • Coordinate fund-raising efforts to improve national e-infrastructure and human resources;
    • Facilitate wider participation of MARGI members in EU Framework  programs and other international Grid projects;
    • Create a national e-Infrastructure development policy.
Within EGI, MARGI assumes the crucial role of providing helpdesk and second-level support to EGI Services, ensuring the smooth operation of these services.

Assuming back the role of a full member of the EGI Federation is a very important step for UKIM as the founding member of MARGI. Facing some challenges in the past several years forced us to reduce our engagement within the EGI Federation. Being the leading e-Infrastructure provider in the country, we believe that restoring our full membership in the EGI Federation, where we have been since its establishment, will enable us to provide much more to the research community in North Macedonia, bridging the digital divide and enabling our researchers to have access to the plethora of possibilities offered by EGI. At the same time, we believe that we can contribute to the federation to the best of our capabilities, making the change in status of mutual benefit.
