e-Infrastructure Reflection Group

e-IRG presents its vision for a web of resources for European researchers, fueling discoveries and innovation

Imagine a seamless web of resources, connecting researchers across Europe and empowering groundbreaking discoveries. This vision is at the heart of the e-Infrastructure Reflection Group (e-IRG), a critical player in shaping the European Research Area (ERA). e-IRG acts as a strategic advisor, guiding the development of robust and inclusive e-Infrastructures. The group was established to balance various aspects, ensuring e-infrastructures are sustainable, effective, and adaptable.

1

A Collaborative Spirit

Central to e-IRG's success is its diverse composition. Bringing together experts from science/e-infrastructure providers, ministries across Europe, EU Member States, Associated Countries, and the European Commission, e-IRG fosters a collaborative spirit. This open and neutral platform allows for comprehensive discussions and well-rounded recommendations. However, e-IRG's influence extends beyond mere advice; the group actively seeks to influence the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) and the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking. Its 2016 roadmap played a defining role in shaping the European e-Infrastructure landscape.

2

A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, e-IRG envisions a long-term future for the European Research Area (ERA). It advocates for a federated system, ensuring seamless collaboration and resource sharing across disciplines and borders. It recognises the transformative power of technologies like AI and Quantum Computing and actively seeks their integration into e-infrastructures. Looking ahead, the activities addressed in European framework programmes envision a transformative impact on the e-infrastructure domain. As an independent policy advisory body with a mandate spanning across e-infrastructures, EOSC, EuroHPC, and the broader ERA, e-IRG's work is highly anticipated. Its drafted policy papers, communication and outreach initiatives, analytical capacity strengthening, and active evaluation processes are all geared towards fostering a dynamic and responsive e-infrastructure ecosystem.

e-IRG works to connect researchers across Europe by facilitating access to research resources.

e-IRG's activities are poised to contribute significantly to the realising of an inclusive, federated, user-driven, and resilient e-infrastructure landscape. As e-IRG liaises with stakeholders, collaborates with the EOSC Steering Board, and reinforces ties with ESFRI, its impact on the intersection of EOSC, EuroHPC, and the digital transformation of the Research and Innovation domain is profound.

In conclusion, e-IRG enables navigating the complexities of the evolving e-infrastructure Commons. Its dedication to autonomy, neutrality, and openness, coupled with its diverse composition, positions it as a unique and influential entity. The journey ahead promises to consolidate existing achievements and chart new territories in the pursuit of a holistic and transformative e-infrastructure ecosystem.
