About EOSC Beyond

Coordinator: EGI Foundation

The ambition of EOSC Beyond is to support the growth of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) in terms of integrated providers and active users by providing new EOSC core technical solutions that allow developers of scientific application environments to easily compose a diverse portfolio of EOSC Resources offering them as integrated capabilities to researchers.

EOSC Beyond introduces a novel concept of EOSC, establishing a federated network of pilot Nodes operating at various levels (national, regional, international, and thematic) to cater to specific scientific missions. Key objectives include accelerating the development of scientific applications, enabling Open Science through dynamic resource deployment, fostering innovation with testing environments, and aligning EOSC architecture with European data spaces.

The project advances EOSC Core through co-design methodologies, collaborating with diverse use cases from national and regional initiatives (e-Infra CZ, NFDI, NI4OS), and thematic research infrastructures (CESSDA, CNB-CSIC, Instruct-ERIC, ENES, LifeWatch, METROFood-RI).

EGI Foundation role in the project

EGI is both the project coordinator and the technical coordinator, overseeing key tasks such as the enhanced architecture of the EOSC Platform that will enable the implementation of the network of EOSC Nodes. In particular, EGI leads the development and implementation of a new EOSC Core service: the EOSC Integration Suite with its initial set of adapters.

The EGI team also features the project’s innovation manager and communication manager, ensuring the links with the wider EOSC ecosystem in Horizon Europe.

Expected results

  • Improve the existing EOSC Core services and framework.
  • EOSC Core Innovation Sandbox – A service incubation and technology testbed infrastructure for the next generation of EOSC Core functionalities.
  • EOSC Integration Suite – Portfolio of software adapters to simplify integration between horizontal and multidisciplinary resources.
  • EOSC Execution Framework – Framework for machine-composability and dynamic deployment of EOSC resources.
  • Guidelines for technical interoperability between the EOSC Core and SIMPL.
  • Pilot a network of regional and thematic EOSC Nodes.

EOSC-Beyond presents an exciting opportunity for EGI. Throughout this project, we'll be able to introduce many of our advanced solutions into EOSC, contributing to the establishment of a fair data and services ecosystem. By collaborating with key EOSC technology providers and engaging with various research communities, we aim to create an EOSC that meets researchers' needs, ultimately fostering scientific progress and interdisciplinary research in Europe. This positions us as an important contributor and reinforces our reputation as a dependable partner for future EOSC projects. Diego Scardaci, EOSC Beyond Project Director

Relevance for EGI

  • Demonstrate our Technical Expertise:
    • Technical Architecture Design: EGI contributes to the design of the overall EOSC technical architecture.
    • Integration suite: EGI will lead the design and development of this new Core service.
    • SMS Design: EGI designs, develops, and implements methods and tools to facilitate the scalability, and automation, in the EOSC SMS to improve the overall SMS maturity.
    • EGI services: several EGI services will be used as a baseline to create new EOSC Core services (Infrastructure Manager, Data Transfer, Check-in, etc.).
  • Position ourselves as a Key player in the EOSC landscape:
    • EOSC Interoperability: EGI designs and delivers solutions to facilitate the interoperation between research services in EOSC.
  • Demonstrate our strong expertise in Project, Communications & Exploitation Management:
    • We will ensure the project runs smoothly and effectively thanks to our expertise in project management, risk management, exploitation and communication.
    • Demonstrating our proven expertise in this area will further consolidate EGI’s reputation as a reliable partner for future project consortia.
