EOSC Data Commons

Building a collaborative future for research data

About EOSC Data Commons

Coordinator: EGI Foundation

EOSC Data Commons’s mission is to support the establishment of EOSC as a trusted European Research Commons. This ecosystem aims to provide seamless access to high-quality, interoperable research outputs and services. By doing so, it enables European researchers to collaborate more easily, increase their productivity, and achieve higher levels of excellence.
The project aims to enhance and speed up data lifecycle management by providing innovative EOSC Exchange services. These services support the discovery, analysis, deposition, preservation, sharing, use, and reuse of research data within a European data and computing continuum. This initiative builds upon the capabilities of the EOSC EU Node and national and European infrastructures dedicated to data-intensive research. It also involves a community of federated repositories stemming from national, institutional, and thematic initiatives, including HAL, KNAW, DABAR, Zenodo, ScienceMesh sync-and-share federation, SWISSUbase, DaSCH, Austrian Earth Observation data repository, NFDI4Earth, FinBIF, ER-C for Microscopy and Spectroscopy with Electrons, and the Swiss Biodata Repository.

EGI Foundation role in the project

EGI is both the project coordinator and the technical coordinator, overseeing key tasks such as designing and delivering an interoperable EOSC Data Commons architecture and services that meet use case requirements, aligning with EOSC Interoperability Framework guidelines, integrating seamlessly with EOSC Nodes, and ensuring consistent software quality, security, and operational standards.

The EGI team also features the project’s innovation manager and communication manager, ensuring the links with the wider EOSC ecosystem in Horizon Europe.

Expected results

  • Enable AI-based data discovery and access over a federation of structured and unstructured data sources;
  • Facilitate data usage, exploitation and reproducibility in EOSC pairing data and software;
  • Accelerate research with automated orchestration and deployment of data analysis;
  • Increase FAIRness in EOSC by integrating FAIR and data quality assessment tools in the research lifecycle;
  • Facilitate the uptake of research FAIRification and reproducibility services within the EOSC EU Node and other EOSC Nodes, including the EGI Federation.
