SAGE

The Data Space for a Sustainable Green Europe
SAGE
About

SAGE

Project Coordinated by IDC Italy

SAGE will create a fully operational Green Deal Data Space (GDDS) designed to improve the accessibility, integration, and use of green and environmental data across the EU to bolster critical areas of the European Green Deal—Zero Pollution, Climate Adaptation, Biodiversity, and the Circular Economy Action Plan. Building directly upon the GDDS GREAT project community and results, and aligning with the Digital Europe Programme’s strategic focus on AI, cybersecurity, advanced computing, and data infrastructure, SAGE leverages outcomes from the European Strategy for Data and Research supported by Horizon Europe. SAGE’s outcomes include seamlessly integrating currently fragmented environmental data through federation, enriching data with consistent quality, validation, and interoperable metadata, and enhancing capabilities for data transformation, processing, analysis, forecasting, target setting, and performance monitoring. Targeting businesses seeking compliance with EGD regulations, government bodies optimising environmental impact, citizens and citizen scientists engaging in environmental stewardship, and researchers aiming to deepen our environmental understanding, SAGE aspires to foster informed decision-making and policy formulation based on robust data and evidence. Sustainability of this action will be guaranteed by the set-up of a company during the project lifetime able to operate the data space and scale operations.

EGI Foundation Role in the Project

EGI leads WP3 GDDS Service Integration, Deployment, and Operations, aiming to deliver an operational implementation of the GDDS by integrating and adapting existing proven capabilities to deliver high-quality and integrated functionalities.

  • Phase 1 (PM01-PM18): On the service integration to deliver the GDDS system, Service Management Framework and operational aspects of the platform.
  • Phase 2 (PM19-PM36): Integration of the GDDS services with the use cases. Use cases should be built on the GDDS platform.

Expected Results:

  • Operational Green Deal Data Space (GDDS), including a technical infrastructure and governance mechanism that enable the reusing and sharing of data.
  • Availability of HV datasets through the GDDS, accessible in a standard way and compliant with FAIR principles.
  • Relevant Use Cases are deployed in SAGE illustrating the value of the GDDS and covering the areas of biodiversity, circular economy, zero pollution, climate change mitigation and adaptation.
  • A strong ecosystem of stakeholders is to be created around the GDDS.
  • Sustainability planning and mechanisms in place, ensuring a fit-for-market approach for the GDDS and financial health.
